How to plan a 3-day Naples itinerary with friends and Pompeii

Give Naples two city days and Pompeii its own excursion day, with winter entry windows, mixed interests and actual arrival times shaping the itinerary.

Planning a shared Naples and Pompeii itinerary

For three full days in Naples, spend one in the historic centre, reserve a separate day for Pompeii, then use the third for the archaeological museum or a slower waterfront route. In autumn and winter, put Pompeii early in the day: its current winter timetable closes the site at 5pm. With only two usable days, choose between a deeper Naples visit and giving one day to the ruins.

Tell Triplore your Naples dates, who is coming and how much archaeology the group wants. It generates a complete, researched itinerary within 5 minutes. Friends can comment on the Pompeii day before tickets commit everyone to the same level of interest.

Day one: stay in the historic centre long enough to enjoy it

Start around Spaccanapoli and Via dei Tribunali, leaving time for lunch rather than treating the centre as a passage between admissions. Italy's official tourism guide identifies these as the area's two main historic axes and places Santa Chiara, San Gregorio Armeno and the Duomo among its sights.

For four friends arriving the evening before, make this the day to discover how everyone actually travels. Someone wanting to enter several churches needs a different pace from the friend hoping to browse craft shops and stop for coffee. Ask Triplore for a relaxed historic-centre day with one main indoor visit, then invite comments on which visit deserves that slot.

Santa Chiara is one option; the Sansevero Chapel is another. Check the chosen attraction's official opening and admission arrangements before paying. Keeping one fixed visit gives lunch and the surrounding streets room to absorb a delay without forcing the group to abandon a second booking.

If saved travel videos have made the afternoon crowded, use a specific chat edit: “Keep Santa Chiara, remove the extra indoor visits and leave time for lunch around the historic centre.” The first generated plan gives friends something concrete to change, instead of asking one person to research a replacement day from scratch.

Day two: give Pompeii a proper excursion window

Keep Pompeii separate from a major Naples museum visit. Our recommendation is to protect the excursion day, including the outward journey and the return, rather than promise the group a full city afternoon as well.

The archaeological park's official timetable, checked on 22 October 2026, lists Pompeii's 15 October–15 March hours as 9am–5pm, with last entrance at 3.30pm. Arriving close to last entry leaves friends who want a substantial visit with too little time. Check the timetable again for your exact date, including holiday notices.

Ask Triplore to keep the morning clear for travel and entry, with an unhurried evening back in Naples. Confirm the transport service and station for your chosen entrance separately before buying admission. The generated itinerary does not reserve trains or guarantee connections.

Ticket scope also changes the day. The official page distinguishes admission to the ancient city from a ticket that also includes suburban villas. Agree whether those extra sites matter before selecting the ticket; a friend expecting the shorter visit should see the longer proposal in the shared itinerary first.

Individual buildings have their own access arrangements. The park maintains an open-buildings list, including temporary closures and building-specific hours. Treat a saved photograph of one house as a preference to verify, then ask for a chat revision if that visit is unavailable. Triplore does not replace the park's current notices.

For a group with different walking appetites, agree the intended length of the visit before departure. Keep dinner flexible enough that tired friends can rest first. A Pompeii day followed by another long sightseeing circuit asks everyone to spend the same amount of energy, even when only one person wanted that pace.

Day three: choose the museum or a lighter city day

Friends who want more archaeology can make the National Archaeological Museum the main visit. Check its official opening calendar for the day of your stay before fixing the order. Leave the rest of the day light enough to enjoy lunch without watching the clock.

If the group has had enough archaeology after Pompeii, use the waterfront instead. Italy's walking-route guide describes the Lungomare between Mergellina and Via Nazario Sauro, with views towards Vesuvius and Castel dell'Ovo. Choose a section that fits the weather and the group's energy; this recommendation is a promenade walk, not a promise that the castle interior is open.

Two museum enthusiasts and two friends wanting a slower morning can split for part of the day and meet for lunch. Put the meeting decision in the itinerary comments, then ask Triplore to reshape the shared afternoon around it. Our guide to different travel styles on a group trip covers how to make that split explicit before resentment builds.

For a winter visit, keep the museum-led option as the starting version and request a lighter waterfront revision if conditions suit. You can return to an original itinerary version if the alternative takes too much out of the day. Recheck admission arrangements before treating either version as fixed.

Count usable days before adding another destination

Three nights do not guarantee three sightseeing days. A late Friday arrival and Sunday afternoon departure leave a very different choice from Thursday evening to Monday morning. Give Triplore those actual travel windows when generating the plan.

Time on the groundRecommended shapeDecision for the group
Three full daysHistoric centre, Pompeii excursion, museum or waterfrontHow much archaeology everyone wants
Two full daysOne Naples day and one Pompeii day, or both in NaplesWhether Pompeii outweighs the lost city time
One full day plus arrival and departure fragmentsNaples-centred routeWhether to save Pompeii for a longer stay
Four or more full daysEstablish the Naples and Pompeii plan firstWhether another outing improves the trip enough to justify its travel time

For this three-day structure, leave Capri, the Amalfi Coast and Vesuvius out of the initial request unless one is the real reason for travelling. Each addition competes with an experience the group has already chosen. Our Italy multi-city planning guide explains the same trade-off across a longer route.

If someone insists on another outing, keep the original itinerary and request a revision replacing a named day. Compare what remains before booking. The weekend itinerary guide helps distinguish a genuinely usable day from a gap between transport commitments.

Generate the Naples plan before committing the excursion day

Start with Naples, your companions and the actual arrival and departure times. Add the budget and preferred pace, making Pompeii a must-do only when the group wants to spend a day on it. Triplore generates the complete first itinerary within 5 minutes, ready for friends to view or collaborate on.

Resolve the Pompeii decision in comments, request any changes by chat, then check the park's current timetable and ticket conditions before buying. Everyone can see the city time they are keeping and the excursion they are agreeing to.
